My Lenovo only charges to 80% — do I need a new battery?

Need a battery or charger?

If your Lenovo stops charging around 80%, you may not need a new battery at all. Many Lenovo models use Lenovo Vantage to enable a charging threshold (conservation mode) to reduce wear.

Most common cause: Vantage charging threshold

  • Vantage can limit charging to ~60–80% to extend battery lifespan.
  • This is normal behavior and does not mean the battery is bad.

How to tell if it’s a worn battery instead

  • Runtime is very short even when fully “charged” to the limit.
  • Percentage jumps or sudden shutdowns under load.
  • Battery Report shows a big drop in Full Charge Capacity.

Use Battery Report to confirm

powercfg /batteryreport

If you do replace the battery

Match the FRU/Part Number, and confirm voltage/Wh and connector shape to avoid wrong orders.
