Press the keys on your keyboard to run the test
Keys tested: 0
Note: the Fn key and the Print Screen (PrtSc) key may not be detected by your browser,
so they will not light up. All other keys (letters, numbers, arrows, and the numeric keypad)
can be tested here.
Laptop keyboard issues – how to read your test results
This online tester shows which keys on your built-in laptop keyboard are working correctly.
If a key does not light up when you press it, or it behaves strangely, there is probably
a hardware problem with the keyboard itself.
1. Single keys not responding
If only one or two keys do not light up in the test, the most common reasons are:
- Physical damage to the keycap or switch.
- Dust or debris stuck under the key.
- Wear and tear after years of daily use.
Try gently cleaning around the key and test again. If it still does not register, replacing
the internal laptop keyboard is usually the most reliable solution.
2. Whole rows or blocks of keys not working
When an entire row (for example Q–P) or a large block of keys does not respond, this often
indicates a broken keyboard cable or damaged keyboard matrix. In this case, software fixes
will not help and a new keyboard assembly is recommended.
3. Wrong letters or “ghost typing”
If you press one key and a different character appears, or the keyboard starts typing by itself,
the internal circuit has likely been damaged by pressure or by a liquid spill. This behaviour
usually cannot be repaired and replacing the keyboard is the safest option.
4. Keys that repeat by themselves
Keys that repeat several times even though you only press them once are a classic sign of a
worn-out key switch. Sometimes changing settings like key repeat delay can reduce the problem,
but if the issue appears in this tester as well, a hardware replacement will give the best result.
5. Backlight not working (for backlit keyboards)
The backlight is not tested here, but if the keys work while the backlight remains off,
the LED backlight circuit may be faulty. You can still use the keyboard, but many users
prefer to replace it with a new backlit keyboard for better visibility.
6. After liquid damage
Spilled water, coffee or other liquids can cause keys to stop working days or even weeks later.
If your test shows multiple dead or unstable keys after a spill, replacing the entire keyboard
is strongly recommended to avoid further problems.
